Chapter Twelve

“DINNER?” SPIKE SAID into the receiver. “Of course, I’m coming,” she replied, while her mother continued to lecture her on the importance of family and how family dinners were essential to keeping everyone close. “Mom, I know,” Spike said, interrupting her rant. Spike waited until her mom stopped talking before adding, “By the way, I’m bringing a guest.”

“A guest?” her mom squeaked. “Is it a female or one of your friends?”

“A female,” Spike blushed, knowing that her mother would be happy about that.

“Oh, so do I hear wedding bells? What is she like? Does she want to have kids?”

“Whoa...” Spike said, halting her mother’s enthusiasm. “Her name is Jemma. We just met, and we are still trying to figure everything out.”

“Is she moving up here?” her mother inquired, ignoring Spike’s comment.

“No, that’s another thing that I want to talk to you about,” Spike replied, wondering how her mom would take the news of her move to San Antonio. She could already hear the lecture that she would receive about how her move was a bad decision as she didn’t have anywhere to stay or a job in that area.

“What are you talking about?” her mom asked. “You are worrying me. Are you trying to give me a heartache?”

“No, mom,” Spike told her, looking at the clock on the kitchen wall. “I’ll tell you when I get there, but I have to let you go. I need to shower before I head out.” Spike listened to her mom lecture her about proper hygiene and about how she should have already bathed by this hour, and when her mom was finished with the long rant, they said their goodbyes and hung up.

Spike shook her head, wondering how Jemma would fair with her mother. Jemma was a fireball, but her mother was something else.

“Did I hear you right?” Jemma inquired, walking down the hall draped in a towel that barely covered her naked breasts.

“About what?” Spike asked, not taking her eyes off the other woman. She had already forgotten everything that she was doing. The only thing on her mind was the woman in front of her.

“Stop looking at me like that,” Jemma laughed. “I know what’s on your mind, and if we are supposed to be somewhere, there’s no time for that.”

“Why not?” Spike grinned, approaching her. “I only need fifteen minutes, and we don’t have to be anywhere until five.”
